That winter, pop radio and the Billboard Top 100 that winter was a hodgepodge: Rod Stewart rasping about his sexy quotient, the sleek glitter-ball grooves of disco, and the softballs of what's now kindly dubbed yacht rock. This disc sounds incredible.From the jaunty tilt of her scarlet beret to her languid drawl, Rickie Lee Jones was the epitome of effortless cool in 1979. After hundreds of listens over three decades, I was not expecting to be so completely knocked out by the difference. I've been through a couple of copies on vinyl and a CD of Pirates. It's one of the oh so rare records where everything works perfectly: the writing, the performance, and the recording are all nothing short of spectacular. I purchased this record on vinyl when it came out and it remains one of my all time favorites. It is possible the SACD layer may be less compressed (I've only heard the CD layer), but why compress the CD layer on an audiophile CD so much anyway? The sound is very clean and warmer than the original CD, but these flaws completely ruin it for me. There is also totally unacceptable dynamic compression - the standard CD is far more dynamic. I've never heard wow and flutter this bad on any other CD, let alone one with audiophile pretensions (and price).
There is absolutely atrocious tape wow and flutter on Living It Up, especially the opening notes. I simply cannot believe this disc escaped Mo-Fi's quality control.
